DONE, ACCORDING TO PREVIOUS OWNER: - new battery 2,260. Best results are had by just waiting a few minutes, and then trying it again. Once it dies, it will not restart right away unless I open the throttle quite a bit. Bike will start fine, then after warming up (usually 3-5 minutes or so), it starts to drop in idle speed, and will eventually die.The bike does this now when I get to 4th or 5th gear repeatedly. If this does not work, I would turn the fuel control valve to reserve and get it start that way. I would pull over to the side of the road and crank it over for a bit and some times it would start. Posted by ebignall79 on May 17, 2010.Engine would start sputtering and would lose power until it dies. Ran bike out of gas died then two days later started acting funny and dies after about five to ten min of riding runs good except for the dying part has carb on it. Harley fxstc 1999 sputters and dies after five ten min of riding. Then it will start right up, runs great like nothing ever happened for a few miles, and then the process starts again – sputters & dies, wait, starts and runs great, repeat. You have to let it rest 20-30 minutes or so. After it dies, the engine won’t restart.it has 28k on it and has never run poorly except after sitting for a while, and i know it is the gas gumming up the carb. My bike has fuelie pipes on it with cones, and an s and s shorty carb and the motor is the twin cam 88.

Harley sputters at cruising speeds, but idles fine and goes great full throttle. Seems to be more of an isdue with front cylinder. Once bike warms and I start riding, if I give her gas in 4th gear she starts sputtering and sometimes stalls. Looking for some thoughts on a stalling issue.Ended up getting it running after this and it did just fine with no sputtering or coughing until I stopped for gas. Put it in gear and get to 10-15 MPH and it sputters and there's a sort of delay in the throttle. So I think it's probably good to go and turn it around. It will start right up with a bit of open throttle and a bit of stutter. Starts up and idles fine, as she warms and idles down slight miss from front jug (I think), after fully warm 15-25 miles when you stop at a light the miss starts, engine slows and stalls. The longer I let it cool down the longer it will run. Then about 5 minutes it shuts down again. Obviously keep the bike upright with the tank open and shut the cap down again after a few seconds.Wait for a couple of minutes and it will start right up. If it doesn't work at least you have eliminated one possibility. It's intermittent, but has been occurring more and more. When the power loss/sputtering kicks in open the fuel cap while still riding and if it recovers (by relieving the vacuum in the tank) then I would check the venting of the tank. At an idle it will either idle high at just under 1800 rpms or stall out. (Edited) Taccone said: So this past weekend my bike, has developed a new problem, I don't lose any electrical power, only the engine starts to buck, kick, stumble and pop.All of a sudden the bike starts to sputter a bit and I start to lose power sporadically. I’m just cruising along at 55, cannot go faster and I’m all the way up in 5th gear. I try to open up the bike a bit more and nothing. 10 minutes later, with trouble seemingly in the past, I hop onto the highway and cruise up to ~55mph. i checked battery cables when i got home. came back with a truck and got it to start and drove it into back of truck. i had to leave it and came back for it later. i had been on it for about 30 min when i was shifting from 1st to 2nd and it started sputtering and backfiring out the pipes. Bluing (on chrome systems) of the exhaust header down-pipes.I was out on my bike yesterday. Requiring excessive amounts of choke to run/start. Typical symptoms of a lean mixture are: Backfiring as the throttle is closed (primarily during coast-downs) Lurching acceleration.
